Description
A finely carved fireplace mantel in figured Italian marble, executed in the Louis XV taste in the early to mid 19th century. The serpentine shelf surmounts a deeply carved Rococo frieze centered by a substantial cartouche of acanthus scrolls and shellwork, flanked by trailing floral drops that descend toward the jambs. The shaped jambs are fronted by carved corbels issuing from foliate pendants, the whole resting on stepped plinth bases.
The marble itself is richly figured, with a warm cream ground traversed by dramatic gold, ochre, and gray veining — selected and matched across the shelf, frieze, and jambs in the manner of the best work in this idiom. The carving is crisp and confident throughout, with the central cartouche treated in particularly high relief and rendered with the asymmetric vigor characteristic of earlier 19th-century work in the Louis XV style, distinct from the somewhat drier academic treatment seen in later Rococo Revival examples.
Mantels of this scale and quality were produced in the first half of the 19th century by Italian and French workshops working in the Louis XV idiom, often for important residential commissions. The depth of the carving, the asymmetric vigor of the central cartouche, and the careful matching of the figured marble place this example at the upper end of the type.
The mantel is currently disassembled and ready to ship in four wood crates. Installation is uncomplicated; the piece reassembles cleanly and requires no specialized fabrication.
