A mid-20th-century English open-mouth, stocky, low-slung frame makes up this distinctive vintage garden sculpture of a hippopotamus, finished with a coarse stone texture and a natural mossy gray patina. African animal figures became highly fashionable ornaments for European estate grounds during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Spurred by the popularity of public menageries, wealthy estate owners used these stone creatures to add a sense of adventure, worldliness, and wonder to their private ponds, lawns, and riverbanks.
