Edith Dawson. An Arts & Crafts Silver Pot with Floral Details & A Red Enamel Lid

$ 4,064
  • Description
    Depth: 4.25" || Nelson Dawson, probably made by his wife Edith Dawson. A rare Arts & Crafts silver bowl with a red enamel lid and a particular E. Dawson floral decoration to the sides, on four elongated footed legs that attach to the entire sides, again typical of Edith Dawson's work. Not Hallmarked. Nelson Dawson was born to a wealthy baker and confectioner in Stamford, Lincolnshire. He trained as an architect, designing a number of buildings in Stamford. In 1885 he moved to London to study as a painter. Inspired by Morris and Co and the Arts & Crafts movement, he studied metalwork with his wife Edith Dawson and they made jewelry and other items in silver, and gold, some with enamel decoration. Nelson Dawson was the founder of the Artificers' Guild in 1901 and in 1899 made the silver trowel used by Queen Victoria to lay the foundation stone of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
