French 19th Century Terracotta Dribble Pot

This terracotta dribble pot is French and dates to around 1840. The name refers to the glaze, which was applied to the upper body and allowed to run, or dribble, down toward the unglazed lower section, creating the irregular drip pattern that defines the type. Made of earthenware in the French provincial tradition, the pot was originally a utilitarian kitchen vessel. The rounded body and wide mouth follow its practical purpose, while the dribbled glaze gives each example an individual surface.
