Minton Majolica Cupids Oval Jardiniere

Description
A Minton majolica jardinière with a mythological theme, decorated in the firm’s blue ground colourway and richly modelled in relief.
The body is ornamented to either side with cartouches enclosing figural scenes: one depicting a reclining couple on a bed attended by cupids, the other showing cupids amongst stylised foliage. The decoration is executed in a palette of predominantly blue, green and yellow glazes, which remain strong and well-balanced.
Moulded leaf-form handles flank each end, a characteristic detail of Minton’s high Victorian majolica production. The base bears the impressed pattern number 1087, together with a factory date cipher for 1872.
