  • Description
Carved stone animal sculptures by Royston Clapp (1929-2009), including a large pig, sitting on haunches with a jovial expression, 31 ins. high; a sheep of short, plump form, 16 ins. high; a group of three sheep, with two alongside each other, the third following, 35 ins. high; in the distance, a group of two cavorting sheep, 46.5 ins. high. English, ca. 1980.

Clapp attended the Bristol Art School in the late 1940s-early 1950s, then taught at a secondary school and later lectured at Liverpool University. He and his wife, Jilliann, whom he’d met at art school, kept a farm, "Shenstone", in Over Kellet, Lancashire. There he found inspiration in the farm animals, recreating some of his favorites in the fine, hard stone known as Hopton-Wood limestone quarried in nearby Middleton, Derbyshire.
