English 1870 Cutty Sark Clipper Hand-Crafted Model Encased in Wood, Glass 1970s
Offered for sale is a hand-crafted model of the 1870 English clipper ship the Cutty Sark which is encased in glass. This finely crafted and detailed model dates to the 1970s and was meticulously crafted by the maker. The Cutty Sark clipper sailing vessel was built in Dumbarton, U.K. in 1870. It had a length of 212.5'. The beam was 36' and the depth was 21'. It weighed approximately 1000 tons. The main mast was 145' and 9" from deck to truck. It's average speed was 14 knots.
From 1870 to 1878 in was used in the China trade routes. From 1880-1883, it's sail plan was cut down and used for general cargo. From 1883-1895 it was used primarily for Australian wool trade. From 1895-1922, it sailed under the Portuguese flag for general cargo. From 1922 to the present day it has been preserved at Greenwich in dry-dock serving as a museum and memorial. -
