Description
Origin: Delft, the Netherlands
Workshop: De Drie Vergulde Astonne (attributed)
Owner: Pieter Gerritsz. Kam
Date: 1705 - 1716
A fine and large Dutch Delft garniture consisting of two baluster vases and one lidded vase. The baluster vases are 14.1 inches in height, and the lidded vase is 17.3 inches in height! These early 18th century vases would have adorned mantels or large cabinets. Fine flowers and birds are painted in cobalt blue on a tin-glazed white ground.
By the style of the decoration and the date of the vases they can be associated with the ''De Drie Vergulde Astonne'' workshop. The Kam family developed a style of their own during this period. Much of their work is completely covered with painted sprays of flowers and birds in all sorts of attitudes. As a rule, the effect of the decoration is more satisfactory on a large surface, as in this case on these two vases, than on a smaller object. This style of painting was used in Delft at the beginning of the 18th century. Executed by painters with a fine brush, and consequently, to produce vases, jars, tankards, dishes, and plates. Needless to say, very few of these pieces have survived the ages.
The vases are in wonderful condition; the left vase is in excellent condition, the right has some restored chips to the top rim, the lid of the lidded vase has a few restored chips to the rim. For vases of this age, all quite normal. -
