Description
A CARVED BOXWOOD CORPUS CHRISTI
Probably Germany, 18th century
8 3/8" H x 2 5/16" D x 2 5/16" W (including stand)
A finely carved boxwood figure of Christ depicted alive upon the Cross, his eyes raised to heaven with his mouth agape as if to speak the final "It is Done". With carefully modeled anatomy and deeply carved hair and beard. The figure is fully worked on both front and reverse, retaining a rich, rubbed surface patina with traces of early polychromy in the recesses.
Condition: Preserved as a fragment, lacking both arms and a portion of the perizonium. The boxwood retains a finely rubbed, warm brown patina with scattered traces of historic polychromy in the carved recesses. Minor surface wear and age related imperfections throughout. Original mounting hole visible on the reverse. Presented on a later iron stand. Ready to place.
