Description
A Magnificent Pair of French Louis XVI Style Ormolu Vases
A superb pair of French Louis XVI style ormolu vases, exquisitely cast and richly decorated in the Neoclassical taste. Each surmounted by a pinecone finial above a domed lid with finely detailed foliate ornament, the ovoid bodies centered with oval medallions enclosing bold rosettes framed by beaded borders, and flanked by ram’s head handles draped with delicate garlands.
The vases taper gracefully into acanthus-wrapped socles, raised on contrasting black bases that highlight the brilliance of the fire-gilt ormolu. Their refined proportions, crisp chasing, and luminous gilding capture the elegance and grandeur associated with the finest French craftsmanship of the Louis XVI period.
Comparable ormolu-mounted vases were commissioned for royal and aristocratic interiors in the late 18th century, with related examples preserved in important museum and private collections. This pair stands as a statement of luxury and artistry, embodying the enduring appeal of French Neoclassical design.
24" high x 10" wide
Very good condition overall. Presents well. Ormolu gilding is rubbed off / faded on pinecone finials -(see photos). Minor spots and rubbing to areas of vases due to age and wear. An extremely high quality pair of ormolu vases. Very unusual and rare. -
