MAROON AND WHITE CERAMIC BOTTLE BY ALAN CAIGER SMITH
Maroon and White Ceramic Bottle by Alan Caiger Smith marked 82.AL, -2 and with three other script marks England: circa 1980. Alan Caiger-Smith is a ceramicist, painter, and published scholar, best known for his tin-glazed lusterware, hand-decorated with distinctive calligraphic brushwork inspired by 13th century Nasrid lusterware, 17th century Dutch and English tin glazed pottery, and pottery of the Triana district of Seville. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Caiger-Smith attended the Camberwell School of Art in 1947, and two years later enrolled at King’s College, Cambridge. In 1954 he began his formal training as a potter under Dora Billington at the Central School of Art and Design. He would go onto to build and found Aldermaston Pottery located in the Berkshire village of Aldermaston, England. Caiger-Smith was Chairman of the British Crafts Centre (1974-78) and was awarded an MBE in 1988. The Reading Museum has an extensive collection of Aldermaston pottery displayed in its Atrium gallery. The pottery can also be seen on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and in many other collections
