This playful blown glass “Pulcini” by Alessandro Pianon showcases bright color, naturalistic form, and expert craftsmanship. Pianon’s “Pulcini” — Italian for “little chick” — are emblematic of Mid-Century Modern Italian design.

The rounded, textured body is supported by a pair of delicate but sturdy copper legs with splayed feet.

The striking eyes are formed by a pair of murrine, a modern interpretation of an ancient glassblowing process in which layered colored-glass canes are sliced, revealing intricate patterns which form the pupils and colored irises. The murrine eyes and pulled, pointed beak convey a lively expression.

Born in Venice, Pianon studied architecture before joining Murano’s renowned Vistosi Glassworks in 1956.
