Description
A book-form box in solid coromandel wood, carved to simulate the spine and boards of a bound volume. The spine articulated with deeply cut horizontal bands and rounded ribs, continuing around the perimeter to reinforce the illusion when displayed upright. The front and back boards carved with vertical fluting beneath a shaped, recessed panel; broad molded edges with undulating profiles to all sides. The hinged lid opens to a crimson silk-lined interior, the lining intact and evenly fitted. The interior lid panel framed in coromandel, showing natural tonal variation. Brass hinges and a fitted locking mechanism; working lock and key. The base stepped and molded. Dark coromandel throughout, with pronounced brown striations and natural variation in tone. Anglo-Indian circa 1860.
