    Antique African 'Bamana' Monkey Mask

Antique African 'Bamana' Monkey Mask, late 19th to early 20th century.

A hand carved wooden mask most presumably from the Bamana people of Mali, depicting a monkey’s head. The form is bold and expressive, with exaggerated features and a worn, rough and matte surface. Small coloured beads are inlaid along the top of the head.

Signs of age and use are visible throughout. Wonderfully carved - very thin.

Originally part of ceremonial practice, now a very decorative and strong statement piece.
