Antique Apoxyomenos male marble torso sculpture, white Carrara marble, XIX sec.

$ 18,000
  • Description
    antique male marble torso, circa 1850
    a copy of the roman marble statue Apoxyomenus in Musei Vaticani in Rome (I sec d.c.) copy of a greek bronze athlete statue Apoxyomenos masterpiece of Lisippo about 320 a.c.
    As is typical of Lisippo's works, the modelling of the body is clearly defined by the tense muscles and by the movement caused by his posture.
    Carrara marble, black bronze
    The original bronze statue of the Apoxyómenos was found, in a subsequent period, to embellish and adorn the baths of Agrippa in Rome. Tiberius, fascinated by the work, tried to take it to his palace on the Palatine Hill, but then had to put it back in place due to the protests of the Romans.
    A marble version was found in 1849 in the Trastevere district of Rome ( now in Musei Vaticani in Rome)
    Apoxyomenos is an absolute masterpiece of the Greek Art, an innovative work that had a great reputation for the impetus of the figure, which captures the moment of the passage in movement between two different positions and balances, and for the complete "breakthrough" of the static representation on a single plane, opening with the evidence of the arms stretched forward towards full three-dimensionality.
    this work was reproduced with a fig leaf as you can see in the photos of the roman marble at the end of XIX century;
    high quality workmanship ,good condition very good and original patina
    the sculpture is removable for the base
    found in a garden of a private residence in Firenze

    Measures with the base: 62 cm 29 x 18 cm
    the marble torso: H44 cm , 29 x 18 cm
    the bronze base: 40 x 20 h 30 cm ( with the bronze rod)
