Description
CARVED FOLK ART WALKING STICK OF SKELETONS AND OCTOPUS
Probably circa late 19th / early 20th century
37 7/8" L x 1 1/4" W (handle)
ref. 511FQH29P
Carved in low relief along the length of the shaft with a continuous field of skeleton figures climbing the textured surface over an octopus, the surface worked against a densely stippled ground. The skeletal forms are rendered in linear outline with exposed rib cages and skulls, stylistically austere.
The handle is bulbous and smoothly finished and is centered around the exposed and polished burl-wood of the handle that has then been carved to look like melting wax. The lower tip is fitted with a copper ferrule.
Condition: Minor abrasions and surface wear consistent with use. Oxidized ferrule. Minor shrinkage cracking along the shaft. -
