Description
This collection of antique Japanese Ittomasu rice measure containers dates from the early twentieth century and reflects the enduring craftsmanship of Japan’s traditional measuring systems. Constructed from wood and reinforced with iron bands, these cylindrical vessels were used for the standardized measurement of rice, a commodity of profound economic and cultural importance. Original stamped markings remain visible on many examples, certifying capacity and often incorporating symbols associated with prosperity and good fortune. Their restrained forms and robust construction illustrate the elegance of objects created for practical use.
Today, these containers are valued as examples of Japanese vernacular design, embodying the balance between functionality and aesthetic refinement that characterizes traditional craftsmanship. The varied tones of the aged wood and the subtle traces of use provide an authentic record of their working life, while their geometric forms lend them a distinctive presence in contemporary interiors. As with all rustic wooden antiques in our collection, these pieces have undergone a preventive two-cycle woodworm treatment for long-term conservation and care. Sold individually. - More Information
