Description A lovely antique Japanese hanging basket woven from susutake (sooted bamboo), circa early 20th century (toward the end of Meiji to Taisho period). The basket was constructed in the form of an eggplant or an okra melon with a tight sectional twill plait along the body. The plait was woven along the ridges formed by the thicker and more rigid bamboo stripes that help to achieve the volume. Free bundled plaiting was used to create the vines on top. The surface of the basket shows a deep patina from the smoked bamboo materials with a mellowed lacquer finish. The piece was made to be a hanging ikebana and there is a built-in bamboo container inside for the water. The ribbon appears to be a later addition and can be replaced as one wishes. The work is unsigned but the workmanship was quite sophisticated. The shape of the ikebana and the opening have a subtle but clear erotic suggestion. Perhaps it was reserved for use in special occasions, as often the case with the ikebana of interesting forms.
