Axel Locher (Danish, 1879-1941) "Victory" Porcelain c 1920
-
Description
Large and extraordinary, this sculpture entitled "Victory" depicts a dignified Danish figure in honorific robes standing astride a crouching nude male figure. Clearly allegorical, the grouping may represent the victory of the Allies over the Central Powers in World War I, or the triumph of civilization over ignorance and superstition; in other case, the dominant figure is calm and handsome, while the subjugated figure is presented with coarse features and a fearful spirit. The sculptor was Axel Locher, who is well known for a series of pieces he sculpted for Bing and Grøndahl, which also made this piece. Locher sculpted column capitals with portraits of important Danish figures such as Ludvig Holberg , BS Ingemann and Adam Oehlenschläger for Grundtvig's House, and later created figures for the spire of the Danish Parliament building. The piece is well marked on the bottom, and includes an inscription reading "Sejren" or Victory.
