Description
Very large French crystal floor standing candelabra by Baccarat
French, Early 20th Century
Height 222cm, diameter 84cm
This extraordinary pair of candelabra, crafted by Baccarat in the early 20th century, exudes imperial elegance and refined craftsmanship. Entirely made from fine cut crystal, the design is inspired by a model created for Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna (1824–1880), reflecting the sophistication of royal decorative arts.
The upper sections of each candelabrum feature delicately scrolled crystal branches, complemented by bobeches with gracefully draped beads and pendants. Rising above the lights is a petal-edged ornament, culminating in a bold, spear-shaped crystal finial that draws the eye.
Each candelabrum is supported by an exquisitely shaped central stem, composed of slender upper elements and more rounded, bulbous forms toward the base. The entire design is unified through precise cut decoration and rests on four elegantly scrolled feet, adorned with geometric motifs. Both pieces are identical, forming a perfectly matched pair.
Baccarat’s exceptional skill captured international attention at the 1867 Exposition Universelle, where Tsar Alexander II (1845–1894) commissioned numerous pieces for the imperial residences, including candelabra for his wife’s private apartments—the famed ‘Candélabre de la Tsarine.’ The pair offered here closely reflects that celebrated royal design.
With their exquisite detailing and timeless aesthetic, these candelabra bring a majestic and sophisticated presence to any distinguished interior, offering a taste of regal splendour.
