Ceramic Bowl with Bespoken Volcanic Glaze by Beatrice Wood

A bespoken ceramic bowl by American artist and studio potter Beatrice Wood (1893-1998). The wide shallow form invites the eyes straight to its stunning volcanic glaze in black covering the exterior, rims and most interior. Highly texturized, the glaze was one of Beatrice Wood's signature styles. The bottom well of the bowl is artistically covered in black mirror like high sheen glaze with a green mottled crackles glaze pool in the center. With a seemingly bubbling pattern, the fluorescent color provides a shocking visual, evoking a crater lake surrounded by a volcanic landscape. The bowl is not glazed on the bottom per artist's practice, and it shows potter's co-centric groove lines. The base signed "Beato" in black as shown.
Beatrice Wood was a multi-disciplinary artist and author. In her long life and career, she was known as Mama of Dada, an avant-garde artist, a potter, an author, and an inspiration. Her long career with pottery is distinguished by a signature style of in-glaze luster that draws the metallic salts to the surface of the glaze by starving the kiln of oxygen.
