Description
This rare and remarkable Art Deco vase -- created by one of the masters of engraved glass art in the 1930s -- depicts Bellerophon taming the wild, flying figure of Pegasus, having lassoed him after the creature paused for a drink. The artist is Vicke Lindstrand, who created a renowned series of engraved glass pieces -- often depicting nude male divers and other figures -- during the high point of Orrefors' art glass production in the 1930s. We have never seen this theme before, so this vase may be especially rare or unique, and the combination of opaque engraving (the Pegasus figure), and a translucent, almost crystalline engraving (Bellerophon) is highly unusual. Lindstrand was one of the leading designers at Orrefors in 1930s Sweden, before he moved to the Uppsala-Ekeby firm in 1940. As Alistair Duncan points out in his definitive book on Orrefors, Lindstrand developed a line of thick-walled crystal glass at the company and decorated them with a series of quintessentially Art Deco engraved figures.
