Most examples of Bura spirit vessels, or Bura bells, are phallic columns of terra cotta incised with complex geometric patterns. This example is a standout in our collection for its wider frame and expressive top. With three simple slashes the potter has created a fantastically mischievous expression. The figure's distinct character offers insight into the individual whose earthly possessions traveled to the spirit realm in this soulfully sculptural object.
