Colorful Lucite Chess Set by Charles Hollis Jones, USA circa 1960s
-
Description
A rare and visually striking Lucite chess set designed by Charles Hollis Jones, a celebrated American designer known for his innovative work with acrylic and Lucite. Created circa 1960s, this set features vibrantly colored pieces in geometric forms—each individually cast in translucent Lucite in contrasting warm and cool tones. One side glows in shades of orange, red, and yellow; the other in green, teal, and blue—producing a vivid chromatic effect when light passes through the pieces.
The board is crafted from clear Lucite with frosted squares, resting on a raised tray with sculpted Lucite feet and gently curved edges. Both functional and sculptural, this piece exemplifies mid-century modern design and Jones’s pioneering approach to acrylic furniture and accessories.
