Chinese Scholar Stone Rare Red Taihu Rock on Display Stand
-
Description
A Chinese Gongshi (known as meditation stone or spirit stone) from Taihu (Lake Tai) balanced on display stand. This scholar rock features a relatively rare red color and porous surface. The stone showcases an uncommon stacked rounded granule formation, grapes like in places. Its elegant mushroom cloud form resembles a red coral in the ocean. The visual poetry of this piece is punctuated with many natural grottoes formed by millennium of aqua element in the lake. It invokes a sense of wonder and imagination. The southern Jiangnan style stand is likely a later replacement.
The naturally weathered stones from Lake Tai were collected and priced by Chinese scholars since Tang dynasty when using them in garden became vogue. Later on, smaller pieces were displayed in the study on complimentary custom stand as a meditation on nature and philosophy. The novelty of the shape and unusual cavities that were weathered naturally through ages were highly appreciated as an inspiration for containing nature in imagination. -
