Pair of large French Samson porcelain and gilt bronze Chinoiserie vases

$ 31,250
  • Description
    Pair of large French Samson porcelain and gilt bronze Chinoiserie vases
    French, Late 19th Century
    Height 57cm, diameter 24cm

    This superb pair of vases was crafted in the late 19th century by the renowned French firm of Samson et Cie. They have produced exceptional pieces which imitated earlier styles, but were not made to deceive but rather to satisfy the growing demand for items of this type.

    The blue ground porcelain bodies of both vases are decorated with several panels of white porcelain. These have hand-painted famille verte floral decorations, their design clearly inspired by Chinese art. Each vase is covered by a blue ground porcelain cover, surmounted by a gilt bronze finial cast to depict fruits and flowers.

    The vases stand on an expertly crafted gilt bronze base supported on four lion paw feet. The underside of the vases is painted with a blue mark alongside the red Samson mark.

    The outstanding craftsmanship showcased on these vases paired with the fusion of Eastern and Western design styles would enhance one’s collection of decorative objects.

    Literature: A very similar vase of this model appears in F. Slitine, Samson, génie de l'imitation, Paris, 2002, page 43.
