Description
English Victorian silver and ebonised wood watch walking stick
English, Late 19th Century
Height 92cm, diameter 4cm
This late Victorian walking stick combines functionality with artistry, hiding an ingenious feature within its handle.
The handle is crafted from silver, with a hinged lid that showcases the repoussé technique. At the centre, a detailed lion’s head with a flowing mane adds an eye-catching focal point. Two small openings on either side of the face accommodate a wrist strap, making it easier to carry the cane and possibly assisting in opening the lid.
Upon lifting the lid, a watch is revealed with a finely engraved face. The black Roman numerals stand out beautifully against the silver border, while the underside of the watch case and the collar feature delicate scrolling motifs inspired by nature. The collar is engraved with the inscription ‘J.C. VICKERY.179.181.3 REGENT ST’, possibly indicating the retailer of this antique.
The shaft of the walking stick is made from dark hardwood and tapers gracefully to the bottom, finished with a metal ferrule for protection.
With its innovative design and meticulous craftsmanship, this walking stick would be a prized addition to any collection, especially for those with an interest in horology. -
