Exquisite Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vase with Persimmons on Ivory Ground

$ 6,600
  • Description
    A finely executed and elegantly composed Japanese cloisonné enamel vase from the Showa period, attributed to the Ando Cloisonné Company—one of the most important and enduring producers of cloisonné enamels in Japan.

    The vase is decorated with a naturalistic composition of persimmons borne on branching stems, rendered in a rich palette of autumnal tones including deep orange, soft yellow, and variegated greens. The leaves display subtle gradations of color, achieved through precise enamel control, while the branches are defined with fine cloisonné wire, lending clarity and structure to the composition.

    Set against a soft ivory enamel ground of notable refinement, the design is both restrained and highly sophisticated. The composition unfolds with a sense of openness and balance, reflecting the aesthetic shift in later cloisonné production toward greater naturalism and painterly simplicity, in contrast to the denser ornamentation of earlier Meiji works.

    Although unsigned, the present vase aligns closely with documented examples from the Ando workshop in both technique and design. Larger scale pieces bearing similar compositions and enamel handling are known to carry Ando marks, suggesting that variants such as the present example were produced within the same workshop, often originally accompanied by paper labels that have not survived.

    The quality of the enameling, the controlled transitions of color, and the refined execution of the motif are all consistent with established Ando production during the Showa period.
