SCULPTED BUST OF AN AFRICAN WOMAN BY FERDINAND PARPAN

$ 12,500
  • Description
    Rare carved ebony sculpture of an African woman by Ferdinand Parpan. Signed: "F Parpan 49". France: circa 1949 Ferdinand Parpan was a sculptor of religious subjects, groups, figures and animals. As a child, he learned to carve with his father, a professional artist. Parpan had planned to study at the École des Beaux-Arts, but due to World War I he worked for six years as an apprentice to an engraver. During this period, he also learned to paint. In 1926, he opened his own studio, but it took him years to exhibit his works in public. From 1936, Parpan exhibited solo in Paris and in small French towns. From the 1950s, he exhibited regularly at the Salon de l'Art Libre in Paris and at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1994, his works have been exhibited at the Town Hall of the 16th arrondissement of Paris. He received a silver medal from the City of Paris, a vermeil medal from Arts and Letters, and the European Prize for Sculpture in Rouen in 1991. Parpan has also exhibited outside of France. He won a first prize in Monte Carlo. He has also exhibited in numerous galleries in England, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and the United States.
