Description
A FINE NEAR-PAIR OF REGENCY TOLE-PAINTED CHESTNUT URNS WITH LION MASKS
Probably Dutch, ca. first half of the 19th century
Item # 402YTP08P
An incredibly beautiful pair of chestnut urns from the Regency era, these are a "near-pair" with almost identical form, though on close inspection there are subtle variations. Each features a lovely ochre ground color with stenciled decorations throughout and a painted scene on the front and back: a sailboat, a windmill, a farm surrounded by meadows and a building with a tower. They exhibit a rich surface history throughout.
Measurements: 12" H x 4 1/4" diameter (base) x 5 1/4" diameter (top)
Condition Report:
Spots of paint flaking throughout; almost perfectly matched pair, though note slight variation in lion masks, subtle profile differences and some variation in the painted decorations - at a glance they seem a perfect pair. Oxidized and beautifully patinated paint, heavily discolored and worn from centuries of handling. -
