French 19th Century or Earlier Carved Oak Coffer

Dimensions: 25” H x 44 ½” W x 19” D

A French, solid oak coffer from the 1800s or earlier, this heavy storage trunk has a paneled exterior counterbalanced with a running coin motif scrolling across the frieze which adds further depth to the 19th century antique. Its lid opens on hand-forged iron hinges to a deep and wide storage compartment (fitted with a small candle box on the right) versatile for an entryway, hall, or mudroom. One could even use it as a traditional “footlocker” placed at the end of a bed. There is an iron escutcheon mounted on the frieze however no key is present. This cherished antique has been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain it for future generations. Evidence of a repair to the back left corner otherwise we believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.
