Description
Charming and Rare Austrian Art Nouveau Silver and Enamel Owl Seal by Georg Adam Scheid.
A rare and enchanting work of Viennese decorative art, this early 20th-century Austrian silver and enamel seal is a beautifully detailed example of Art Nouveau elegance. By renowned silversmith, Georg Adam Scheid, the seal is crowned with a finely enameled polychrome iris blossom, its vibrant petals rendered in soft, naturalistic tones that reflect the organic curves and botanical motifs celebrated during the era.
The body of the seal features a sculptural array of owls in low relief, their eyes set with tiny jewel-like stones, watching attentively from all sides. The owl, a time-honored symbol of wisdom and mystery, pairs beautifully with the iris—a flower associated with messages and insight—creating a piece rich in poetic symbolism. Marked with the 900 silver standard and Scheid’s maker’s mark G.A.S, this seal reflects the fine metalwork and refined enameling techniques that earned Scheid international acclaim. A Knight of the Order of Franz Joseph, Scheid exhibited at prestigious venues such as the 1889 Jubilee Exhibition and the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle.
Delightful in scale and exquisite in detail, this seal is a rare collector’s gem, embodying the elegance and intellectual spirit of fin-de-siècle Vienna.
