Description
Set of Four Victorian silver stands by Hunt & Roskell, London
English, 1874,
Height 27cm, diameter 24cm
These stunning silver works were made in 1874 by the leading London firm, Hunt & Roskell, successors to Mortimer and Hunt as the jewellers and silversmiths to Queen Victoria. As such, they represent some of the finest work Victorian silversmiths have to offer. The four stands, unusual too in that they survive as a set of four (most examples are single objects or pairs), consist of sterling silver mounts, set upon domed circular bases, replete with baluster stems. Scrolls in a foliate pattern with leaves chase the silver, against a matt ground. The glass itself is cut with a group of star-shaped designs, while the silver is fully stamped, crested, and hallmarked, inscribed 'Hunt & Roskell Late Storr & Mortimer 6724.' Silver weight: 2,700 grams.
