Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Basket by Iizuka Hochiku
-
Description
A Japanese bamboo Ikebana basket by Iizuka Hochiku (1883-?; active approx 1900s-1940s). Hochiku was born in Tochigi Prefecture Kanto region and active in Tokyo. He was the third son of Iizuka Hosai I (1851-1916) and studied under him.
This basket was made using "sooted" bamboo (susutake in Japanese). This bamboo materials was collected from traditional thatched-roof houses that had been exposed to decades of smoke from a hearth or cooking fire, therefore the basket displays a deep rich patina that is hard to attain by color-lacquering. It was constructed in a Classic form with handle using the techniques of open twill plaiting and bundled diagonal plating. It is signed "Hochiku" underneath.
