Description
James Bearden
“Gilded Cityscape Candelabra”
American, 2017
An evocative sculptural candelabra in blackened and 24-karat gold gilded steel by American artist James Bearden. The elongated and asymmetrical form recalls a futuristic skyline or industrial landscape, rising from a heavily textured pedestal base with a dramatic architectural presence. Designed to hold multiple candles, the work occupies the space between sculpture and functional object, characteristic of Bearden’s ongoing exploration of architecture, ruin, and monumentality. Traces of colored wax applied by the artist remain within several of the candle cups, adding subtle tonal variation and evidence of use.
Executed with Bearden’s distinctive heavily worked surfaces and layered patination, the work possesses a strong sculptural silhouette from every angle and functions equally well as a centerpiece, console sculpture, or mantel installation.
