Jane Knight "The Tree" Monumental Fiber Sculpture, Private Collection 1960s

Created in the mid-1960s, "The Tree" is an extraordinary one-of-a-kind monumental fiber sculpture by celebrated Detroit textile artist Jane Knight (1928–2013). Retained in the artist's own private collection throughout her lifetime, this remarkable work was never offered for sale or publicly exhibited, making it one of the most significant examples of Knight's oeuvre to appear on the market.

Standing approximately 7 feet high with a dramatic 5-foot spread across its uppermost loops, the sculpture is conceived as a fully three-dimensional environment rather than a traditional wall hanging. A central column, measuring approximately 20 inches in diameter, is constructed from densely wrapped vertical forms in graduated earth tones. From this trunk emerge dozens of sweeping hand-formed loops wrapped in richly colored wool, while cascading lengths of natural jute flow outward at the base like an intricate root system. Composed of literally miles of hand-twined jute and wool, the sculpture rewards viewing from every angle, continuously revealing new silhouettes, rhythms, and spatial relationships.

The work perfectly embodies the spirit of the American Fiber Art movement of the 1960s, blurring the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, and textile. While unmistakably organic in its inspiration, The Tree also possesses a distinctly modernist vocabulary, recalling the biomorphic forms explored by artists such as Alexander Calder and the sculptural experimentation emerging from Cranbrook and the wider mid-century design movement.

Born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Jane Knight earned her BFA from the University of Michigan in 1951 before serving as Art Director for Detroit's iconic J.L. Hudson department store and designing for the Cranbrook Theatre School. Through her husband's work with Eero Saarinen & Associates, Knight became part of an extraordinary circle of architects and designers that included Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, and George Nelson. These relationships profoundly influenced her artistic vision, which fused modernist principles with an intuitive appreciation for natural forms and masterful craftsmanship.

Knight's monumental fiber sculptures were commissioned for prominent residential and corporate interiors and exhibited in galleries throughout San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. Her work is represented in important corporate collections, including BorgWarner and Chrysler, and has been published in books dedicated to fiber art and textile design.
