-
Description
Monumental ceramic vase by Jean Marais France c 1975. Black glazed in his iconic black glaze, wheel thrown vessel. Piece unique. The size of this ceramic is very impressive and unusual.
Marais became a significant figure in the ceramic revival of Vallauris, France, opening a gallery there and designing posters for its pottery festival.
While many know Jean Marais as an actor (La Belle et la Bête, Orphée, Fantomas), few remember him for the multi-faceted artist he proved himself to be!
Painting, sculpture, drawing and ceramics, Jean Marais succeeded in expressing his talent through a plethora of different media. His efforts at training in the ceramic arts led him to Vallauris, the town of potters in the south of France where he opened his first gallery in 1975.
Signed Jean Marais.
In photo of base of foot there is an original glaze crack not integral to the stability of the vase. -

Message from Seller:
Pavilion is the collective vision of Deborah Colman and Neil Kraus, both graduates of the master of fine arts program at the Art Institute of Chicago. From a longstanding interest in art and design, frequent buying trips to France and Italy have influenced the direction of the gallery to offer items that are not easily sourced in Chicago and United States. Postwar design has been the focus for 18 yrs and we also look forward to new design that crosses boundaries and dialogues as well to the past
