Description
A highly unusual vase by Jean Mayodon. One of France's leading artists in the Art Deco era, Mayodon piece depicts two scenes of nude male hunters with several deer. One of the hunters is shown with a large, arching bow - a classic theme favoured by artists in the 1920s and 1930s. Mayodon largely worked in ceramic or porcelain. His male figures tend to have wide shoulders and imposing physiques. In this piece they are given a bold, bas relief treatment. Mayodon was known for his rich and atmospheric glazes, represented in this vase with his use craquelure.
