Contemporary American ceramic artist Joanna Poag’s Binding Time (Lattice structure with Quatrefoils) Wall Panel Sculptures are part of a series. They are hand built and fired to cone 6. Binding Time explores entropy as it relates to personal narrative. It incorporates intuitive processes that have a flexible set of parameters. Time, which we often consider as linear and meant to be spent has morphed into passages of rest and activity, fullness and chaos. The accumulation of additions to the grid have revealed growth and movement that mirror my life experiences. They are shown as a collection of 8 (installation measures approximately 152” W x 34” H x 2” D) but are being sold separately for $3,850.00 each (17” W x 34” H x 2” D ). All works are accompanied with a certificate of authenticity and/or signed by the artist. This sculpture will ship directly from the artist’s studio in Rochester, NY.
Joanna Poag received her MFA from the School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology and her BS from Roberts Wesleyan College. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Art and Gallery Director at Davison Gallery, Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester, NY.
Artist statement:
“My work explores the homeostasis of a system, and the resulting equilibrium from multiple parts self-regulating to form a whole. The multiple components of each piece make up a unified whole, creating a glimpse into a moving, healthy cross-section, a living, open system.”
“The time and process involved in the creation of each piece is a meditation that is reflected in my work; there is an organic, human quality clearly visible in the fingerprinted surfacing of each piece. The renewing of life and growth in even the smallest of structures is refreshing to me and I hope my work encourages my viewers to explore the intricacies of the world in a fresh way. I continually seek to create a glimpse of the elegance of structure and order that I find so captivating”.
