Description
Rare and striking, this bold, bronze allegorical sculpture is entitled "Glory" or "Gloire," and is a smaller version of a grand public sculpture -- the Monument des Fusiliers Marins Francais -- that was sculpted by Jules Bernaert in 1934 to pay tribute to the French riflemen in World War I who defended the Melle region. This figure is part of a larger stone and bronze monument located in Melle, northeast of Brussels near Ghent. The piece has a beautiful verdigris finish, and the Art Deco, stylized form of the female figure and her drapery catches the light beautifully. The sculpture is mounted on a square of marble in a lovely golden color. Note: the sword has been repaired.
