Description
Although paintings by Rubens and Poussin offer the most famous depictions of the Abduction of the Sabine Women -- a tale from the early days of Rome -- this story has been told again and again, as here. In this case, Kai Nielsen, one of Denmark's leading sculptors, created a sculpture that has the same high energy and sense of movement that you will find in the best Baroque paintings and sculpture. Here, Nielsen shows three nude figures: a female figure who is flanked by two nude males, one attempting to pull her away and onto the horse, and the other attempting to save her from abduction. The medium is a lovely ivory-hued bisque porcelain, made by Herman A. Kähler in Denmark. The piece is signed at the lower edge of the reverse side.
