Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Basket Ikebana by Koide Bunsei

A Japanese bamboo flower basket (ikebana) by Koide Busei (1960-) in 2007 and originally purchased from Tai Modern, Santa Fe. The basket was delicately woven with thin Madake bamboo stripes in Thousand-Line Construction reinforced with Twining of contrasting colored rattan. A Diamond Twill Plaited base with a bespoken wavy pattern adds a hidden pleasure to the details. Thousand-Line construction is also known as Parallel construction (Kumimono in Japanese) which allows a more linear and vigorous form. Minimalistic in appearance, this airy basket stands quietly to present an unassuming geometrical perfection and a sense of lightness. The base is signed with carved signature Shosei.
Koide Busei (born 1960) was born in Nagano City, into a family with multi-generational legacy of working with bamboo. Trained under master artisan Iwao Shotaro in Oita prefecture in Kyushu. His wok pivots toward turning the functional basketry into work of sculpture that breaks away from tradition form. His work is hold in the The Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation's Japanese Bamboo Art Collection.
Purchased from Tai Modern, Santa Fe in 2008, the basket comes with the gallery receipt and artist's CV.
