Description
Large pair of French Neoclassical style ormolu and lapis lazuli vases
French, 20th Century
Height 145cm, width 60cm, depth 45cm
A striking example of 20th-century French Neoclassical design, this pair of large vases is crafted from richly coloured lapis lazuli and enhanced with finely detailed ormolu mounts.
Each vase presents an elegant amphora-inspired form, with a rounded ovoid body that rises from a waisted socle to a slender neck, crowned by a domed lapis lazuli lid. The deep, vibrant blue of the stone is highlighted by the gleaming gilt bronze, creating a captivating interplay of colour and texture.
The bases are square with chamfered corners and elaborately decorated with ormolu, featuring medallions, fabric swags, tassels, and scrolling acanthus leaves. From circular acanthus mounts at the socle, twin ormolu handles extend gracefully, each designed as a foliate-wrapped column supporting a lyre whose arms unfurl into curling acanthus leaves. A delicately modelled putto rests behind each lyre, seated on the neck for a charming sculptural accent.
Each vase is topped with a gilt bronze finial depicting two birds courting atop a nest, while the front of the body is further embellished with an intricate ormolu mount of scrolling foliage. The combination of luminous lapis lazuli and masterfully cast gilt bronze creates a sense of grandeur and refined artistry.
Perfect for display in a bar, cabinet, or formal interior, this pair of vases exemplifies the luxurious craftsmanship and timeless elegance of 20th century French decorative art. -
