Description
Late 19th century carved wood folk art walking stick
Continental, Late 19th Century
Height 89cm, width 6cm, depth 4cm
This antique walking stick, intricately hand-carved from wood, features a striking and distinctive design.
At the cane’s top, a three-headed figure is presented. The central head portrays a bearded man with his eyes peacefully shut. Above, a n interesting character is shown, draped in a top that hangs loosely off one shoulder, with his head covered and one arm extended downward to shield the bearded man’s face. On the opposite side of the bearded man’s head, a dog or sheep’s face is carved, adorned with vivid purple stone eyes.
The walking stick also includes a small, carved eyelet, providing space for a wrist strap to make carrying the piece more convenient. The shaft has a branch-like form that tapers as it extends, terminating with a protective metal ferrule.
This finely polished wooden walking stick is a remarkable example of folk art craftsmanship and a wonderful addition to any collection of artistic, handcrafted antiques. -
