This marching band cymbal player whirligig exhibits wonderful sculpture design and form while surviving in a remarkable state of preservation. The figure, most likely inspired by the artist, is carved with elaborately worked shoes, leather collar, moustache and belt. U.S. City Directories record a Rocco Pavese in Saginaw, Michigan as early as 1887. Born in Italy around 1852, he immigrated to the United States in 1868. By 1908, Pavese appears to have relocated to Grand Rapids and is most frequently listed as a musician. Pavese died on November 26, 1950.
