Rare One-of-a-Kind Buccellati Sterling Silver Polo Trophy for Boca Raton Polo

$ 64,500
  • Description
    A rare, one-of-a-kind, custom-made Italian sterling silver polo trophy by Buccellati, commissioned for the prestigious J. Myer Schine Annual Memorial Polo Tournament, one of the most celebrated equestrian competitions in American polo during the 1970s.

    This extraordinary museum-quality presentation trophy is modeled as a stylized Classical Greek amphora, masterfully handcrafted in solid 925 sterling silver and raised on its original decagonal wooden presentation base. The front is exquisitely hand engraved with a dynamic scene depicting a polo player on horseback in full stride, capturing the speed, elegance, and athleticism of the sport. Encircling the shoulder is the engraved inscription:

    "J. MYER SCHINE ANNUAL MEMORIAL POLO TROPHY."

    The trophy is mounted on its original decagonal hardwood base fitted with ten sterling silver presentation plaques, nine of which commemorate tournament champions from 1972 through 1980, documenting the history of one of America's most prestigious polo competitions. The base rim is fully stamped and engraved:

    Buccellati Italy 925

    Commissioned specifically for the Boca Raton Polo Club, this monumental trophy represents an exceptionally rare surviving example of Buccellati's bespoke presentation silver. Unlike the firm's standard production pieces, this trophy was individually designed and handcrafted as a unique commission, making it a true one-of-one work of art.

    The engraved plaques record victories in Boca Raton, Houston, and Fort Lauderdale, honoring many of polo's legendary competitors, including John Oxley, John T. Oxley, Julian Hipwood, Memo Gracida, Gonzalo Pieres, Pascual Salatino, Hector Merlos, Corky Linfoot, Jamie Mackay, Jake Sieber, Bart Evans, Roy Barry, Tom Harris, and numerous other celebrated figures whose names helped define modern American polo.

    Beyond its importance as a sporting trophy, this remarkable object is equally significant as a work of Italian silver. Buccellati's unmistakable craftsmanship is evident throughout, from the beautifully proportioned amphora form and elegant hand-chased decoration to the finely engraved equestrian scene and meticulously executed architectural handles inspired by classical antiquity.

    Even more remarkably, the trophy retains its original fitted presentation case, an element that is almost never found surviving with monumental commissioned sporting trophies and one which greatly enhances its rarity, provenance, and desirability.
