A large and stunning stoneware ceramic vessel in the form of an urn or a deep bowl by American potters Mary and Edwin Scheier (1908-2007;1910-2008) dated to 1984. The darkly glazed vessel features their iconic design of interlinked figures, arranged in two rows of six and circumventing the perimeter. The highly textured volcanic glaze is of a brilliant hue of crushed gold in contrast with a turquoise blue, highlighting the contours of the sculptural feature on the surface. The sculptural face could be seen from inside as the concaved medallions adding an interesting texture to the interior. The base is incised Scheier 84.
Partner in life and work, Scheiers are American potters known for their mid-century modern ceramic studio work and the incorporation of sculptural elements that emphasized in mystic human interaction. For their complete biography, see Currier Musuem of Art which holds the most complete collection of Scheier's work.
