Description
Matthew Boulton
England c.1775.
A White Marble and Ormolu Mounted Venus Vase Perfume Burner by Matthew Boulton. According to Nicholas Goodison the Venus Vase proved a very popular product mainly used as a model for clocks though some were made as perfume burners. In a sale at Christies in 1778 there were five Venus vases described as "Venus and Cupid in ormoulu , at the Tomb of Adonis. Only one found a buyer at a price of 13 10s 0d.
Many were exported and in 1772 the Paris marchand-mercier Charles Raymond Grancher advertises for sale a "Venus weeping at the tomb of Adonis on a white marble base.
Coincidently this one was purchased in Paris. Possibly the same.
Provenance
Private Collection. Paris.
