Description
Set of three German porcelain bird figures by Meissen
German, 20th Century
Largest (magpie): Height 21cm, width 10cm, depth 5cm
This exquisite trio of bird figurines is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of the esteemed Meissen porcelain manufactory.
Each figure is meticulously sculpted from fine white porcelain and hand-painted with remarkable attention to detail. The birds rest on intricately designed bases, shaped to resemble tree trunks adorned with delicate leaves and blossoms. The largest piece, a striking magpie, leans forward with its beak slightly open, as if mid-song or in search of food. The sparrow gazes forward with keen focus, while the bullfinch adopts a similar position. Their feathers are brought to life with a vivid array of colours, contrasted beautifully by the softer pastel hues of the base.
Inspired by the designs of Johann Joachim Kändler (1706–1775), Meissen’s most celebrated modeller, these figurines exemplify the manufactory’s mastery of porcelain artistry. Each piece is authenticated by the iconic underglaze blue crossed swords mark, a symbol of Meissen’s legacy and excellence.
A superb choice for collectors of fine porcelain, this enchanting bird set will particularly appeal to those with a passion for ornithology.
