Description
A bold and visually engaging example of mid-twentieth century Japanese cloisonné enamel, attributed to the Sato Cloisonné Company, a workshop known for its refined execution and embrace of modern decorative design during the postwar period.
The vase is set against a vibrant turquoise enamel ground of remarkable clarity and brilliance, providing a striking field for a central band of geometric ornament. This band is composed of repeating angular motifs rendered in tones of coral red, cream, and black, forming a rhythmic and highly graphic pattern reminiscent of stylized key designs and abstract architectural forms.
The neck is further articulated with complementary geometric decoration, carefully balanced to echo the central register while preserving the overall harmony of the composition. The precision of the cloisonné wirework and the clean separation of color fields demonstrate a high level of technical control, particularly in achieving crisp, uninterrupted lines within a boldly simplified design.
This restrained yet impactful aesthetic reflects the evolution of Japanese cloisonné in the mid-twentieth century, when workshops such as Sato moved toward modernist principles—favoring clarity, repetition, and graphic strength—while maintaining the traditional techniques of enamel application.
The rim and foot are finished with metal mounts, offering a refined structural contrast to the luminous enamel body and framing the composition with subtle definition.
Works attributed to the Sato Cloisonné Company are appreciated for their ability to bridge tradition and modernity, resulting in pieces that are both decorative and distinctly contemporary in spirit.
A sophisticated and highly decorative example of mid-century Japanese cloisonné, combining technical precision with a confident modern design language.
